Great price, sturdy press
This is a well made kitchen sized press specifically purchased to press Apple Cider from ground Apples and it works perfectly. It is not recomended for pressing whole Apples, so they have to go through a grinder or food processor first. This press would work fine for whole grapes, cheeries, anything like that.Cast iron parts, beautiful hardwood slats, tray and pressplate with a large solid screw. Comes fully assembled. It also came with a 1/2 pt. of food friendly polyurethane and even a brush to seal the wood before use.Most excellent, beautiful little press. Great cider too! ... now if I let it go "hard" and toss in some yeast and a little extra sugar, build a still, why I could ... ya know? Can you say "Apple Jack"?

Works great
We just pressed 6 gallons of apple cider. The press with a bag works great. Well made and easy to use. The cider came out tasting wonderful. We can hardly wait 'til it ferments and hardens.

Worked very well for me...
After reading the positive and negative reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy the Weston press and grinder from Amazon this fall to juice apples from our trees. I found it worked very well, and in fact can't wait until next year to do it all again! Many of the issues in the negative reviews are not that big of a deal. In fact many of the complaints are simply not well founded. Yes, the ratchet only advances a quarter inch per pull, but this means you're getting that much more torque as well. Yes, the wood blocks tend to move a little, especially when starting a new press batch, but a little steadying as the ratchet decends keeps them in line until the pressure is sufficient to hold them in place. I found that when pressing our ground apples (I also used the Weston grinder), I got the best results by only loading the press to about 50% capacity. This is the equivalent of about a five gallon bucket of whole apples before grinding. By only loading it to 50%, the pressure per...

It seems sound and works fine. It's a little strange to have to put in all of the wood blocks to push down the follower but the threads on the center acme screw only go down to the top of the basket.Other reviewers have commented that it does not get fruit dry at the first press, having worked at wineries myself, not even the big professional presses get the must dry in one pressing. you must pull out the cake, stir, and re-press. This is called the hard press. Some keep this stuff seperated from the main juice/wine.Pretty solid and sound for the price.

Did 500 pounds of apples in 8 hours!
This press is wonderful. We were able to do 500 pounds of apples into 30 gallons of cider in just 8 hours. I was sceptical about how well the press would work with as fast as we were going, but the pomace was very dry when it came out of the press. (I cooked the pomace in the steam juicer and it made great applesauce.) The press was VERY easy to clean, also. You do have to apply polyurethne after you get it, and it does not come with the wheels that are in the picture, so it is not as easy to move around as it looks. The chopper did whole apples as long as a strong teenage boy or a man was cranking. The rest of us cut the apples in half. All in all, it was well worth the cost.
