Daron will steal your heart
The strength of Cecilia Tan's fiction has always been her characters. She can write delightfully wicked villains that you can't help but love to hate. She can pen a cad with the best of them. But in my opinion, she shines the brightest when she writes a character who is simply heartwrenchingly sweet, especially when that character seems to hope beyond hope that this wasn't true of them. The protagonist of this story is one of those characters. Rock guitarists are supposed to be thick-skinned and effortlessly charming cads. Daron isn't this at all: Daron is...well, he's real. It's 1986 and Daron isn't even 20 yet and he's already well on his way to being a future rock god. Unfortunately instead of being a womanizing sweet-talker he's an averagely awkward 19-year old who just happens to be gay (even though he can't even bring himself to say the word.) He doesn't know anything yet about who he really is, or what he needs in a partner, or even if he wants a partner at all. All...

Addictive and fun, it's easy to love Daron!
The previous review puts it very well, but I thought I could expand the info on this title a little. Daron's Guitar Chronicles Vol 1 is the first 40 chapters (If you could call them that. They aren't numbered, instead the author uses song titles from that time period. They can range anywhere from 1-10 pages, depending on font size). By the end I felt compelled to find out what happened next. Lucky for me and any other fans, the rest (and it is still ongoing, over 160 chapters now!) is available for free (she takes donations, and please, if you enjoy it, donate!) on Cecilia Tan's website. The link is at the end of the ebook, or you can just google 'Cecilia Tan' and 'Daron's Guitar Chronicles' and you'll find it. Daron's Guitar chronicles is very well written and researched. Good enough
Daron's Guitar Chronicles starts in 1986. I enjoyed the settings as the author described them so well that I believed I was there. When Daron's band played, I was there dancing in front of the cage. Daron's character is well developed. I knew him. I understood exactly when and why he was anxious, depressed, whiney, scared or bold.What I didn't really understand were the other characters. The supporting characters were warm at best. I didn't walk away feeling like I really knew any of them nearly as well as I knew Daron and that often detracted from the scene or encounter. There were some characters that I would often confuse and would need to go back and check what relationship they had with Daron. It interupted the flow of the story.The plot (?) was vague. I gave it 4 stars because I liked it enough to continue reading but doubt that I will hook up with Daron the next time.

Great book for musicians of all sorts.
The information in this book can be used by musicians of all types and instruments. While the book is meant specifically for guitarists and for good reason, the tidbits of info regarding songwriting and inspiration are suitable for all audiences. While this book does not contain normal 'music' theory it does contain theory of creativity which is not covered in most guitar books. I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in a deeper understanding of songwriting and the meaning behind music rather than the technical details of its construction. If you enjoy this book I also highly recommend "zen guitar". One more note: be sure to listen to all the suggested bands/music at the end of each concept to get the most out of this e-book, they are eye opening examples.

More like a music Bill Of Rights than a typical music lesson.
Being a musician for many years, and admiring Steve Vai, Mr. Bungle, and a lot of other groundbreaking artists, I was already aware of Carl King's musical work on various commercially successful albums as well as a ton of avant garde, or/and experimental albums he's been on with many of my heroes. I saw this ebook advertised through word of mouth on Facebook and was pretty excited to get a perspective from him. I've been playing guitar and writing music for around 22 years and I wish this was one of the earlier books I got my hands on instead of at this point. The power of his ability to express ideas about music, art, and guitar is really exciting to me. The words he writes in this short book become tools to liberate, and empower you. Clear, Easy to understand, Practical applications
I have been playing on and off for about 10 years. I have read fretboard theory books before, the CAGED system included, jazz comping, and numnerous books on Modes. I can honestly say not one of them explain the application as well as this book (and videos).Most of what Serna teaches you probably have seen before; but what is unique about this material is the application. I dont know how many times before in other material the CAGED system, pentatonic scale, and modes have beenn disussed but never applied with actual examples. This course ties it all togther. At least it did for me. For the first time ever, I understand how modes are actually used and which are common and which are rare. Try finding that info in any other course - never happen.Throughout the course Serna provides examples from the book and videos of how to apply what you have learned from actual songs you have heard on the radio etc.. Good grasp on solid information
This is my first guitar learning book besides a Mel Bay book that one of my friends gave me a while ago. I am pleased with this book and I do find it helpful. I certainly have no regrets from buying it. I also like how the author gives a personal touch by sending and replying to e-mails. He also sends links to some extra materials that compliment the material in the book.I just want to add that I do know music theory from my years playing sax, if that weighs on my review at all.I'm sure that anyone who wants to get a solid hold on the basics of playing guitar without learning music theory will benefit greatly from this book. It covers the pentatonic patterns, CAGED chord patterns, arpeggio patterns, interval patterns, major scale patterns, and a few other things, and relates them to each other very well. Overlaps with Fretboard Logic, but has some useful info on modes
This book overlaps a great deal with Fretboard Logic vols 1&2 which I purchased at the same time. It shows you the CAGED chords, scales from the chords, etc. I got about halfway thru the book when I started to see some things I didn't know already. I consider myself an intermediate player.The way he explains modes is unique, to my knowledge, and very helpful. The mode is in context of what root it's played over. You can't hear the mode of a scale without hearing the root underneath. This alone made the book worth the price of admission for me, and I'm still working through the rest of it.Some silly things: (1) Auhor lists examples of songs that contain what he is teaching. A list of songs with the E chord in them, oh yeah! Later this is somewhat more useful, for example a list of songs with chromatic scales, or mostly seventh chords. Many of author's teachings cite the same songs as example without specifying what part of the song is relevant to what's being...

Very Informative, Easy To Understand, Five Stars!
I really enjoyed reading this book. Very simple and easy to understand. I started teaching myself with no foundation whatsoever. I knew a few songs and chords but was feeling overwhelmed by the how complex learning to play was sounding to me. This book put all that in prospective for me and gave me a good solid structure to build from. I no longer feel stressed and discouraged about learning. You will learn all the "getting started" subjects like anatomy of a guitar, how to read tab, tuning and so on. The exercises are perfect for learning quickly. Also I love how it suggests a list of songs from different genres that are easy for beginners to play and are made up of the chords you have already learned. I was ready to give up teaching myself before this book and now I have a new outlook and feel very encouraged. Since finishing this book, I have started on book 2 and will most definitely finish up with the third. THANKS ALOT TO THE AUTHOR! FIVE STARS!

Comprehensive
I'd muddled about with guitar for a while and thought I'd check this out. Really seems to cover everything- looks great too. The downloads aren't amazing quality but it does help to have a reference. They are free so I won't complain too much! Overall I'd say it was great value and a very good book- I enjoyed working through it although I already knew the chords.
