Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
*** UPDATE at the bottom of this review (February 2012)***Background - I own a lot of technology. I like electronic toys and I indulge myself in whatever the latest gadget is. This has given me a broad taste in different segments of gadgets, and a pretty good eye for what works and what does not work. Some convergence works but to date, most just plain suck (January 2011). Prime example of poor convergence is my iPhone 4 and Apple App Store GPS software like Navigon, Garmin, TomTom, MotionX, iGO, GlobalNav, MapQuest, Google and others. I tried them all - and in one way or another, they all suck. Why? Because the iPhone is primarily a mobile phone and an iPod. When an SMS message comes in, or a Facebook alert, or a Calendar alert, or a phone call, it either distracts or switches away from GPS navigation. Not a good idea when driving, far less when driving in unfamiliar areas!!!Convergence in GPS mapping systems is completely understandable. Magellan,...

Great Screen - Great Fratures - Some Quirks
Having been a Garmin owner for about 5 years I had no doubt what brand I was going to buy, my old Garmin served me well but it was time for a new one and the wide screen was a key feature I wanted in my new one.The screen is impressive, while going from 4.3" to 5" does not sound like much it is really amazing how much more map and information that fits well on the screen. The screen itself is anti-glare that works, and very bright if you want it, I have the brightness at 60% and that is fine even in bright sunlight. The images are very crisp and clear, street names and such are auto-sized to not obstruct the map but big enough to read easily. The volume when it is reading out direction is also outstanding, so loud I have it also on 60%. So a solid 5 Stars on the screen and voice volume, as well as the pronunciation of the street names!Quirk: When I first got it I was in my office and opened it, plugged it in to just power and fired it up, it kept asking for me...

Garmin's nuvi 1450LMT is Outstanding
Researching GPS devices was and is worse than buying a car with all the different product offerings and features plus none of the model numbering seems to make sense which was even more frustrating. You can't tell a low end unit from a high end unit. Garmin is no different either.Through all of that I am very pleased that I settled on the Garmin 1450. IMO Garmin has made a wonderful device. The UI is very intuitive and very easy to operate even with my big hands. The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. From power up to satelite acquisiiton takes seconds. The turn by turn instructions are very clear but a bit too chatty. We have found the street name pronunciations fairly entertaining. The points of interest have been pretty accurate as has the gas station mapping and the hospitals and such. The bread and butter of a GPS is really whether it can get you where you need to go especially if you as the operator have no idea. I have travelled outside my area of...

Why I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT
Why I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT.I have owned many voice command systems in my car from both Magellan and Garmin. I use my gps in my car and in my truck when pulling my 5th wheel. I had a Magellan Maestro 4050 with voice command since 2008 and decided to look around for a new one with a few more bells and whistles. I spent a week solid reading reviews and was ready to buy a Nuvi 3490LMT but kept on reading about software issues and after trying on at BestBuy didn't see it worth $400 for a few additional features. With that in mind I looked back to Magellan Roadmaster 1700 and a 4700 and even the 5175 Traveller and just couldn't find one that had the features I wanted. So back to Garmin I looked and found out that The Nuvi 2595LMT had everything I like and needed and was $150 less than the NUVI 3490LMT.What I liked in the Nuvi 2595LMT5" screenVoice CommandsSpeaks street names, turn by turnOne button to save and name a...

A valuable upgrade from Garmin
Most of the reviews here are for the 2595, not the 2555 that I purchased. I didn't need voice activation or bluetooth so the 2555 is just fine for me.I have to disagree with the reviewer that says it is slow to find where you are. I am a long-time Garmin user and I think it is light years faster than my old Nuvi model. Although some of the new features are a little difficult to get used to I still think this unit deserves the highest marks. The larger screen alone makes it worth an upgrade from an older unit. It's also great to have lifetime maps and traffic upgrades. Again, that gives this model high marks. My favorite feature on the 2555 is the categorization of places you would like to go. For example, on my old unit I used to have search for and then type in "REST A" to find the next rest area on my route. With the 2555 "Rest Area" is a category and therefore only a couple of button presses away.In summary, I am a happy consumer who is...

My 3rd Garmin - New Features and how they worked
This is my 3rd Garmin GPS. I have become accustomed to their user interface and performance, so I can't compare to other makes. I wanted to talk about the new features that attracted me to this unit and how I evaluated their usefulness on my first 3 hour road trip to a location I know by heart.Feature 1 - 5 inch screen. I am older and am having to use reading glasses to see the GPS mounted to the dash. My earlier unit was a 4 inch. I considered a 7 inch Magellan, but when I found out you couldn't install custom POIs on the Magellan, it ruled that one out for me. We go camping frequently and I have all the state parks as custom POIs. I also have truck stops I like to use. The 5 inch display was definately an improvement for me.Feature 2 - Automated voice recognition. I definately don't like being distracted by touching the screen to see how far the next roadside rest is (see custom POIs above). So I thought telling the GPS what I wanted made a lot of sense. When...

Great construction, easy installation, but one flaw...
I purchased this Grip-iT holder to use with my iPhone 3g. It is great built quality and installs very easily into the air vent in my car. It seems to be pretty sturdy and holds the iPhone 3g very nicely without any fear of it falling out. The bottom fold out brace bars are adjustable which is good for the iphone since you will want to move them from blocking the speakers. I am very happy with my purchase! So here is the only negative or flaw in this design for me. Although the Grip-iT mount has a very nice adjustable rotating ball mount that allows you to turn your device from portrait to landscape and "fine tune" the angle, it is a very manual process. Other car mounts like the Kensington mounts have a rotating holder that clicks into pre set angles but is very easily done even while driving. The Grip-iT require that you make your adjustment and then lock it into place by tightening a large finger adjustable "nut" behind your device. This requires 2 hands...one to...

Works ok but...
This item worked perfectly in a 07 civic vent mount however we could not fit it on a 04 civic vent, the brackets were just too big for this car. I used it with no problems with and iPhone and was satisfied until I tried to turn the screen sideways. For some reason it all came flying out and the springs ended up inside my AC vent, way too far inside to reach. So now I have to dismount my car's dash to get them out....I will try super glue to make them stay in place.

Well designed
This mount works great. The selection of Garmin mounts is confusing as some are two parts and some are one. If you have a Nuvi with the included windshield mount, then this is the only part you need to buy. The included mount disassembles at the ball and socket joint and attaches to this one. I can't say it will never come off the dash if I do some really high speed maneuver, but so far it's held steady for all regular driving.I like that it's easy to move the mount and gps unit down to the floor when I park. Yeah a thief could still see it if they came right up to my car but at least it's not obvious from halfway across the parking lot like a windshield mount is. A thief that sees an empty windshield mount is probably going to assume (correctly) that I've just put the unit in the glove compartment.

Finally, the right mounting solution
I have become addicted to my Garmin Nuvi 660 and used it for six months with a successful windshield mount. But now I have bought a new car. I discovered that the windshield suction mount left an ugly black ring on the window of my old car. (I assume I can get this cleaned up when I detail the car for selling.)So no way was I going to put one of those on my beautiful new car. I tried the Garmin dashboard mount but shied away from the "permanent" disc. I found the "temporary" disc was just not up to the job of holding this device in place -- at least on my vehicle. I found this very frustrating. I read about the Portable Friction Mount, found a Best Buy store that had it in stock and ran out to buy it.Though it is not terribly good looking, it does the job very well. I tried whipping around a few tight turns in parking lots and the whole thing stayed put. As another reviewer said, this lets you easily remove the thing and put it on the floor so it's not...

Best Solution for NUVI in my Prius and my Ford: Theft Protection As Well!!
My Prius has a rough dashboard and a windshield that slopes very sharply. Thus, the suction cup mounts are not good solutions. Fortunately, the friction mount is a great solution. It works much better than I expected. Very stable, does not slide, and lets me adjust my Nuvi to a variety of different angles. I can place the GPS anywhere on the dash or even on the center console. Also works great when transferred to my wife's Ford.Only downside to the device is that it has a rather large footprint, but not prohibitively large. I like the fact that I can easily use this in both of our family vehicles depending on where we need the GPS.UPDATE: Now that I have used this mount regularly since May, I have to say this is the best mounting solution I've found for a GPS or any other device for my car. It hasn't slid out of place once!! Given the rise in GPS units being stolen from cars, this mount allows you to easily stash your GPS Unit and mount out of sight and...

Good GPS protection, but not a "hard" case so much as a "firm" one.
For the past year or so, I've been carting around my GPS unit in a high-quality zippered nylon bag originally sent with the PSU that I put into my CPU tower about two years ago. I had been carrying my GPS in that pouch for two reasons: first, if I happened to leave it in a visible spot in my car, most people wouldn't expect a PSU pouch meant for carrying extra wires and cords to contain a GPS, thus removing the theft-worthiness of it at first glance; and, second, I still wanted to provide my glass touchscreen GPS with at least moderate protection when I threw it in my handbag. That Fatal1ty pouch covered both of those bases, but me being the picky person I can be, I just wasn't thrilled that the pouch wasn't a perfect fit for my GPS.Enter this zippered "hard" case by Amazon. Honestly, I can't imagine that any branded product sold by or for GPS makers could be any better suited to comfortably holding your 5" GPS unit. The interior is clean and simple, with a mesh pouch...

Basic but Good
I was sent an Amazon Basics Hard Carrying Case for a 5" GPS from Amazon Vine. Here's my take on it.This is a hard carrying case in black nylon with EVA padding. A nylon zipper opens three sides and two stretchy bands keep the top from opening completely. A stretchy pocket in the lid holds the power cable. Outside dimensions are approximately 6 ½ inches by 5 inches by 2 inches deep. My Tom Tom 1505 GPS device fits inside perfectly, although there isn't room to accommodate the car charger. Still, the sleek design protects the GPS unit from bumps or scratches and is ideal for travel or storage. Had the case accommodated the car charger, I would have given it a five-star rating.

Great for small devices, not large GPS
Great for small devices like smartphones. But its starts shaking and rattling around with large devices like GPSs. Opens about four inches wide but rotates around 360.

What I Was Looking For
If you look at the picture of the product, that's what you get. It does exactly what I got it for. I drive a lot of 13+ hour trips and use my Iphone as a GPS, which gets annoying when theirs no really convenient place for me to place my phone. This product solves the problem. It sits on your dash with a sticky rubber base and holds any smartphone or MP3 players, even a low profile GPS. The functions are flawless, however, it's not the most pretty looking mount. In the world of slimline devices something as chunky as this falls short in the look category. The other thing is the slider that holds my phone in. It's a spring loaded slider so when I push a button it automatically opens, which is cool, but not when the temperature is cool. In the cold it's sluggish to open and it will probably wear out after some use. That aside, it's a good buy and a great value. I'd buy it again and I'm buying it for some friends too.

Anyone who uses the Navman GPS MY60T sees similarities between her and plug-and-play devices that are available today. Before a new GPS device, make sure you have all the features examined before you buy. While most users will not have this problem, there are still areas in remote areas not assigned to the GPS database. This particular issue is not so problematic because most people have their own Bluetooth device and not one you would have on the GPS. The Navman MY60T has some great features, but there are elements of the GPS that you can not enjoy. In short, everything is built into the Navman GPS MY60T.

With so many GPS units on the market today, it might be easy to not notice the Navman MY60T GPS. Trending in the area of intelligent electronics, the Navman MY60T GPS is making headway in this area. Most GPS devices that are newer will include a lot of features that are commonly seen in all of them. Contemporary features like the spoken directional guidance feature is something you might want to consider on your next GPS. MY Drive is a feature that is on this GPS that learns your particular driving habits that you do everyday. Navman MY60T is an excellent GPS product that may satisfy everyone who gets it. The only drawback is that it has some difficulty choosing alternate routes. The first thing you need to consider is why you need a GPS and what you will use it for. Technology has advanced to the point where electronic devices have the capacity to learn, and remember what they have learned, to increase their understanding.

A couple of other points for someone new to GPS. The GPS will recalculate and find a new route to your destination. My limited understanding of the current offerings from Garmin is that some come with maps of Europe pre-loaded and others (like mine) require you to buy a separate card. The other important point is that *YOU* are in charge, not the GPS. And ignore the stories about how a GPS made someone drive into a river.
