One of the best investments I have made in tools!!!
Zen Toolworks DIY CNC Machine Review:Short reviews are great but I decided that mine should be a bit longer and in depth so anyone who reads it will have a better idea of what exactly a Zen Toolwork CNC Kit is. In short It is a GREAT item. If you want a short review see below.Short Review: A Must have. One of the Best Investments I have ever made as far as tools go. Buy it!!!Long Review:A MUST HAVE for anyone who wants to get started with CNC with an excellent well made precise and affordable machine. If you want to design prototypes, carve foam, plastic metal or wood (this machine is perfect for doing wood engraving as it has a fantastic detail level even when down to extremely small designs with the right bits) or even if you just want to make small custom and/or precision parts on occasion for models or RC vehicles; or perhaps just do a little custom engraving once in a while this machine is more then able to handle the task without...

Awesome kit that works like a champ!
I ordered this item from an Ebay auction. It came packaged into a small USPS box, carefully and neatly. All the parts were there with extras as well.It took me about three hours to assemble it. Make sure you have a good vise with at least a 3" jaw to help you set the bearings and bushings. Keep an eye on the orientation of the parts as well so you only have to build it once :) The online build guide is well thoughtout and easy to follow. And the online community is active and ready to help.My goal was first to build a model CNC mill. To start from the beginning and learn as much as possible. This kit certainly did that for me. Once finished, and under computer control, I stuck a small pen into the spindle and did some lettering with serifs. Even under high magnification the curves and tips were perfect. Very accurate and capable unit!Ive been cutting foam now for casting molds and just happy as can be. The performance is good, the...

Great Kit, Awesome Support
The kit got to the east coast in lightning time. The kit is very well manufactured, and relatively easy to put together. The documentation is new, and a little lacking, but Zen has already made improvements in the week I've had my kit. You are buying this from an American small business owner, who must spend all day on Google supporting his product. If you have a question, it will be answered directly by him, in less then an hour. It is also supported via Google groups with a forum of some knowledgeable people as well, it's very newbie friendly.

NOT INCLUDED - This is just the CNC machine with motors. You will need a 3 Axis Stepper Motor Driver to manage each motor, a spindle/cutter (a Dremel would work) and a DC power supply for the driver. You will also need a computer with a standard printer port and CNC software. - You will also need a way to mount and secure the spindle/cutter tightly to the Z-axis plate on the machine. We offer a Spindle Kit complete with a mounting frame for this machine. We also offer a 3 Axis Stepper Motor Driver that we use with our CNC systems.

You can see some video demos of this machine in action. Just go to YouTube and search for "Zen Toolworks CNC"

You are looking at a DIY kit of a CNC carving machine. Now you can build your very own CNC carving machine to do relief carving, letter cutting, inlay and all other interesting features to enhance your woodworking, PCB or other projects.

The body of the machine is constructed with high density PVC boards. Steel guid rod, linear bearing and stainless steel lead screws are used to construct the moving parts. The anti-backlash brass nut design will virtually eliminate all backlashes. New Nema 17 motors(2 phases, 1.3A, 4 leads) for all three axis are also included. An epic win for the hobbyist community!
I got my copy of the book today. I've spent maybe a half hour skimming the book, and my initial impression is that it is very thorough and complete. It goes through the basics of why / how the linear bearings will work, how to cut and drill the MDF, etc. Even a novice, that had only minimal experience with simple power tools could understand and follow these directions to completion.Everything seems to be very well documented, and is supported by many photos, schematics, and drawings. The photos are clear, even though they are black and white. The color versions of most of the photos are even on the website, if you need them, as are some videos. Each chapter includes some nice quick-glance features, like a "Summary of Work" and a list of what MDF parts you'll be working on next. This is a nice addition, to help "ground" what you're doing, and keep you understanding what is going on.The second chapter, titled "Hardware and Tools" is going to help a...

Build Your Own CNC Machine
I've had my copy of "Build Your Own CNC Machine" a week and have finished reading it. I've waited years for the cost of computer controlled tooling to become affordable for artisans and hobbyists. Even so, acquiring the needed information has always been daunting. I believe these authors have opened the gates wide and will impact many disciplines. This book walks you through making a simple yet robust CNC machine that permits 3 axis, computer-precise milling in whatever your application, be it printed-circuit boards, violins, or aircraft parts. With this book knowledge of your own field may now be more limiting than your tooling. The author's machine is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF,) available in every home-improvement store. They use relatively easy joinery. The order of presentation and construction makes great sense. The author's techniques require reasonable accuracy but not high skill or tooling. Their website videos were made at a kitchen table...

Product Description

Do you like to build things? Are you ever frustrated at having to compromise your designs to fit whatever parts happen to be available? Would you like to fabricate your own parts? Build Your Own CNC Machine is the book to get you started. CNC expert Patrick Hood-Daniel and best-selling author James Kelly team up to show you how to construct your very own CNC machine. Then they go on to show you how to use it, how to document your designs in computer-aided design (CAD) programs, and how to output your designs as specifications and tool paths that feed into the CNC machine, controlling it as it builds whatever parts your imagination can dream up.

Don't be intimidated by abbreviations like CNC and terms like computer-aided design. Patrick and James have chosen a CNC-machine design that is simple to fabricate. You need only basic woodworking skills and a budget of perhaps $500 to $1,000 to spend on the wood, a router, and various other parts that you'll need. With some patience and some follow-through, you'll soon be up and running with a really fun machine that'll unleash your creativity and turn your imagination into physical reality.

  • The authors go on to show you how to test your machine, including configuring the software.
  • Provides links for learning how to design and mill whatever you can dream up
  • The perfect parent/child project that is also suitable for scouting groups, clubs, school shop classes, and other organizations that benefit from projects that foster skills development and teamwork
  • No unusual tools needed beyond a circular saw and what you likely already have in your home toolbox
  • Teaches you to design and mill your very own wooden and aluminum parts, toys, gadgets—whatever you can dream up

What you’ll learn

  • Build your very own CNC machine
  • Learn about linear movement and motion transmission

Who this book is for

Build Your Own CNC Machine is the perfect book for hobbyists who like to build and create using wood and metal. Noble effort. A few deficiencies to be aware of.
First I must thank the authors for putting this together. I'm sure it has consumed alot of time to develop this machine and the book that shows us how to make it. I'm also sure that they are not getting rich from this either, but do it because they are passionate about it.I have wanted to build something like this for ages but just haven't done it, but when I saw the article in MAKE magazine I was inspired to buy the book and start the project. The companion website, [...] is a huge help as well. The only criticism I have is around the technical details. You will find several deficiencies, such as a complete and accurate bill of materials, and several errors or ommisions on the drawings. You can download these things from the website but there are several versions with contradictions between them. Were the authors to make changes, I'd recommend that they add a section to the back of the book with a bill of material, possibly with...

Awesome!!!
Customer Video Review Length:: 0:23 MinsI've been working with engraving machine for several years and have many wood working tools. I used similar machines for years. Two weeks ago, I bought Click-N-Carve machine as the store's recommend. Coz currently I need a smaller one and dun wanna spend too much money. The main interest in the Click-N-Carve was to make carved signs and it does really awesome job. It's been a couple of weeks now and I have already used it to make different design projects and tried different pictures on the wood and plastics. Otherwise, I discover many surprising things about the machine. So far, though I used it to carve every day, the machine is really stable and dun have any problems. The interface of the software is really easy and friendly to operate the Click-N-Carve. Ihave been using other cnc engraving machine's software for many years. U must go and check it out on their website. But I'm not sure if they had already upload the pic of the software. U can...

Product Description

WidgetWorks Unlimited CNC Vinyl Drag Knife Bit allows you to use your CNC router, CNC mill, or CNC plasma cutter to cut sign vinyl and other thin materials just like a professional sign shop plotter - without buying additional equipment or learning new software. Blade pressure can be adjusted for cutting sign vinyl in any thickness as well as sandblast mask, paper, cardboard, and plastics up to 1/32 thick. We recommend using the 60 degree blade (Sold Separately - Product Code: CNC-VINYL_KNIFE-RB_60 ) when cutting materials other than sign vinyl. WidgetWorks Unlimited's CNC Sign Vinyl Drag Knife bit fits in any 1/4" collet, just like a regular end mill. Instead of rotating and cutting like an end mill, the bit allows your CNC machine to cut adhesive backed sign vinyl and other thin materials with the spindle TURNED OFF. The spring-loaded bit holds a tiny carbide knife that swivels as your CNC machine drags it around the profile of your design. Inside the bit, pressure on the blade is precisely controlled, allowing the knife to cut through sign vinyl without cutting through its wax paper backing. The bit is designed to compensate for tables that are not perfectly flat. Comes complete with everything you need to start cutting sign vinyl, including the floating-head blade holder, 45 degree carbide blade, and detailed directions on how to create your cut files, how to set your bit height / Z=0 level, and recommended feed/speed rates. (Mounting bracket required for use with CNC plasma cutters is NOT INCLUDED.) CUT SIGN VINYL WITH YOUR CNC MACHINE IN 3 EASY STEPS - STEP 1: Create your CAD/CAM file using standard software. STEP 2: Secure your sign vinyl to the spoilboard with vacuum, tape, or spray adhesive. Insert the CNC Sign Vinyl Drag Knife Bit in your 1/4" collet like a regular end mill. STEP 3: Run your cut file to create your lettering/graphic. The spring-loaded carbide knife swivels as your CNC machine drags it around the profile of your design. Top to learn more

Solid machine and easy to build.
First off, the instructions for putting this together are online and it has a lot of pictures and a few videos. There are no printed instructions in the box, but I didn't mind this because the online stuff is very good at showing all the steps. It's just something I thought some people might want to know up front. This kit comes with all of the mechanical parts and 3 stepper motors. It does not come with any cutting/carving tool or driver/controller boards for the steppers. Zen Toolworks sells a very nice spindle motor and bracket kit separately for $69.99 . I have that kit and in my opinion it's a perfect fit for this machine. Stepper motor driver boards are available from a number of places, or you can build your own from instruction available online also...

Great experience
I am new to CNC and decided to purchase this kit as a entree to the world. The kit arrived promptly and was packed well. Putting the machine together was a breeze and took about 2-3 hours. The process was clear from the online instructions, and all the parts (big and small) were included. No frustrating missing screws. Zen support is AMAZING. After putting the machine together, I was trying to get the software and the computer functioning properly. Email responses were fast (usually within the hour) and I even got a phone call to make sure everything was resolved. I highly recommend Zen Toolworks, it was a fabulous experience from start to finish. Although I underestimated the time it would take for a newbie, such as myself, to get up to speed with creating tool paths and calibrating the system, all is working well now.I look forward to the next time I can do business with Zen.
