Garmin Zumo 665
After riding on a 1000 mile trip this week, here is my review of my first use of the 665 on a road trip. I ride about 20,000 miles per year and have used the Zumo 550 (my previous Garmin) for 45,000 miles the past 3 years, hence my comparison of the 665 to the 550. Cons: Major problem with the unit is the XM features shutting down unexpectedly. One of the reviews here experienced similar problems and was told by Garmin that the antennal cable is faulty and a new cable is being designed. I do not think the cable hardware is the issue. I believe it is the software. I experienced the same problem once before I left on the trip and was told by Garmin Tech to perform a hard reset of the unit by holding your index finger on the lower right corner as you turn the unit on until you see the message that "a reset will erase your data". You have to select "yes" or "no". Yes does reset the XM but erased all of my favorites, routes and settings. The unit reverts to the...

Excellent, though pricey.
The 665 is just about perfect for its intended application, open-air motor navigation w/ XM radio. Pros: Fast acquisition High sensitivity MP3 playback XM reception, plus traffic & weather Bluetooth A2DP support (sort of) Removable battery Waterproof Sunproof "glove compatible" user interface Cons: Bluetooth A2DP support -- Will not pair with the music/audio for a smartphone (I'd like to stream radio) Short battery life Expensive I can only give this 4 stars since it won't support the headphone profile for my smartphone. I like to stream radio while I'm driving long distances but I can't with this GPS. There are also some nits to pick with the user interface (such as not remembering the map zoom after a power off) but it is a superb GPS for motorcycles and open-air autos. *Also note, until July 4, 2010 there is a mfg rebate of $100 that is *not* valid for...

Software update makes good
Garmin has released software version 2.80 for the Zumo 660. The update states the issues brought up in the previous reviews and corrects them. Kudos to Garmin for acknowledging the previous shortfalls, and concerns, then addressing them in a software update. It is always good to point out shortfalls to a company that responds, otherwise they don't know if there is anything wrong. I presently own three Garmin's, a street pilot purchased 4 years ago, a Nuvi purchased 6 months ago, and now the Zumo 660 for my motorcycle. The Zumo is obviously one of the most expensive GPS units a consumer can buy. It is by far the fastest screen updating and most accurate GPS I own. Beats the 6 month old Nuvi by a long shot. I recently drove (haven't mounted the 660 to the bike yet, wanted to test drive the unit) from central NJ to Baltimore. If the Garmin display was the windshield, I could have used only that screen, it is that fast and accurate. The lane assist function takes all...

Good GPS But Not Perfect
I just got back from a 7 day motorcycle trip, so I have enough useage of the Zumo 660 to give a fair review. -The screen is bright enough to be read under almost all conditions, even when wearing sunglasses on a sunny day. The only time I could not see the screen properly was in direct sunlight with the sun shining straight onto the unit from over my shoulder. This was seldon an issuee. Screen=5 stars. -The MP3 player was generally good, but lacked an equalizer. This is especially an issue on a motorcycle where wind noise drowns out bass. An equalizer is surely just a software issue, so there is no excuse for it not being on an $800 unit. MP3 player=3 stars -The mapping software that comes with the unit is generally easy to use, and routes are easily loaded into the Zumo. Mapping software=4 stars -The automotive mount that comes with it works well. I have used the unit in cars almost as much as on my motorcycle. Automotive mount=5 stars -Routing,...

Good Wiring harness but it's not a mount
The wiring harness is very good quality, and makes it easy to connect to battery and includes a fuse, plus weather resistant sockets for mic, headphones USB, BUT I was very dissappointed when I opened the box, the RAM ball is included, but NO means of mounting it on your bike. So I don't think this is properly advertised. I had to order the rest of the hardware direct from RAM.

However, this cradle is required, so... If this is what you need, then Amazon is the place to buy it.

Zumo 550 with updated software (04/2007)
I just wanted to comment on the Zumo 550 with current software. I purchased this unit about 3 weeks ago and before I got it I was a little disheartened by some people's reviews on some lacking features. However when i got the unit and upgraded to the latest software (that was available as of 4/15/2007) many negative comments seem to have been addressed (if I'm understanding the commented issues correctly). First the views of the unit seem very flexable and I don't see the limitations. You can select between 2-D top down views for the people who are used to that view or 3-D. The unit has multiple levels of zoom/un-zoom from the big buttons on the outside as well as on the touch screen... I'm just not seeing any limitations. You can also taylor how much detail you want to see on the screen ( more or less). The only thing I do agree with is the Icon's used to show your position (you can choose between about 6 or so) are kind of large. Would have been nice to have the choice to alter...

Zumo 550 on a Harley FLSTSC
The 550 works very well. Specs say it works between 32 & 140 degrees. I ride all winter - so far it works at 15 degrees F. Surprisingly easy to use with heavy winter riding gloves. The motorcycle mount is much cleaner than I expected. Very flexible, allowing the unit to tuck in close and not look dorky. The car mount is clean with an acceptable albeit not great speaker. It's VERY easy to move between vehicles. I was somewhat disappointed at first about the lack of a built in speaker, but if I need to walk around with it, it's no big deal to use your cell phone Bluetooth with it. Maybe that's the price you pay for a truely waterproof unit. While riding, you can hear the alert tone using a cell phone Bluetooth, but cannot understand the audio. I plugged in iPod ear buds into the bike mount and it sounds great without being obvious about being "plugged in" (I ride a half helmet). If you use a full face with built in speakers you will be very happy with the audio. Others complained...

Zumo 550 - A Few Thoughts
People complain about the Zumo not having a built in speaker. Well, you wouldn't be able to hear it while riding your bike it if it had one, so it's a bit of a moot point. On a side note, I think there are some features the unit lacks that can be somewhat annoying. First, and definitely the most annoying for me, the elevation by which you view your position on a GPS determines the amount of detail you see, i.e. POI's, street names, distance of road to travel, etc. The units I have used previously (factory nav in a Honda, other Garmins and the Mio 310 to name a few) had the ability to select zoom/elevation from the main nav screen allowing you to choose your "view" of the road so to speak, at anytime. With the Zumo, you cannot change elevation/zoom from the main nav screen, you can only adjust it while in map mode searching for a destination. The second you go back to the main navigation screen you loose the elevation you chose and go back to a default level of zoom,...

Great Zumo Accessory
Works as advertised. I purchased this item for my Garmin Zumo 660 for use on my motorcycle, but I even use it the car. Took it a road trip, everyone thought that the GlareStomper was the greatest add-on for a GPS they have ever seen. I can keep the GlareStomper 320 attached to my Garmin Zumo 660, and still put the unit inside the Garmin provided carrying case. I didn't need to remove any Velcro material to access the on-off button. It kinda interferes with the audio out and external antenna connector ports under the weather cap, but a little trimming would easily fix this. I definitely give it a thumbs up!

Dash mounted shade
Works very well and prevents window glare from blanking out the screen on my Nuvi 1350T. I cut slots in the Velcro strip that sticks to the outer frame to allow the 1350 to be easy removed when needed. Does its job well.
