Great songs -- easy enough for beginner to play
I bought this for my son, to give him something besides what's in the school song book for him to play.He is in sixth grade, and just started playing this school year.In short, the songs are simple enough for him to play, and his teacher even let the students play them in class. The book has a nice range of song genres. If he practiced, I think he could play them well soon.

A great book for an intermediate-level trumpet player
Santa brought this book to my daughter for Christmas. She has played trumpet for 4 years now and is considered to be one of the top players in her school bands. She plays jazz and classical pieces, is a soloist, etc. Some of the songs in this book are relatively easy for her, while others are challenging. (I have played trumpet for 30 years and there are a few songs where even I have to stop and study the music a bit!) There are no songs in here which "scare her" or anything like that. Since she knows a lot of the tunes from movies or from soundtrack albums, she is able to pick up the tunes reasonably quickly. What I especially like about this book is that she'll play for a good long time because she actually likes the songs. For a young trumpet player, playing for longer stretches of time is really important.

beginner's clarinet
My son started using this book 3 months after he first played the clarinet. This is his first musical instrument (he is in middle school). He may not always want to play his school music but he will easily spend 30 minutes or more with this book and even though he can't play most of the songs perfect yet, he is having fun trying.

Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection.
Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. Great for a beginner trumpeter with promise
This book really met my son's beginning love affair with his trumpet. If you have a trumpet player who is interested in learning more, I recommend this book -- encourage their interest while they still have it. These songs are short and easy, so most first or second year trumpet players will be able to play several of these songs, while you get to walk down memory lane listening.

An eclectic mix
I picked this up despite the clearly mixed reviews, wanting to relearn the trumpet and not minding if things were going to be 'too easy'. I wanted to renew my ability to sight-read and work up to playing more intricate pieces, plus have tunes I know. This way I can hear how I expect it to be versus what I hear I'm playing. There were small pieces and some a page or two long, so that aspect of variety is good.I actually did not know many of the pieces, though, so it isn't quite as helpful (with what I had in mind) as I had hoped. In and of itself, this isn't a 'problem', per se. I can learn new pieces once I improve my basic skillset. It's nice to see simple classics like Puff the Magic Dragon (that I can play for my daughter) and Strawberry Fields, something my wife will enjoy hearing.At best, I'd call this a mediocre collection that does just what it says it will do in a light, tightly-packed book. fabulous
Marsalis' prodigious talent coupled with the greatest of Baroque brass composers is a combination that cannot be beat! Of course, Anthony Newman takes everything (less the slow stuff, of course) at his characteristic "lively" pace, but Marsalis keeps up. His execution of the ornamentation is awesome! Gotta have this one!

A blast of brass
I first encountered this on cassette, quite by accident. It later became the background for my work at morning at the easel painting watercolours. But this is no wallpaper music. The technical genius of matching separate recordings of different trumpet parts is surpassed only by Marsalis's bright and lively technique. The masters would be pleased. As for the watercolours, I can now stand before them and see the music's influence on paper. Well worth the listening...
