Great, quiet workout elliptical machine
I have been looking for an elliptical machine for a while, and the Schwinn 420 (2012) model does the trick. Great value and easy to set up, I have used this for a few months now with great results. The length is perfect at just over 5', so it works much better than larger machines for homes without much floorspace, like mine. The digital display is a bit tough to read (it is not backlit), but the workout and adjustable degree of difficulty is comparable with more expensive machines. Recommended. Top to learn more

A Great Elliptical Machine
This is one great machine. It is very smooth,very stable and extremely well built. It took me a little over two hours to assemble and the assembly directions are very clear and well labeled with one exception. In the assembly directions, it calls for six #B screws when it is obvious they meant #A screws because they were the only ones left in the assembly process. I was worried that I would not be able to assemble it without help but had no trouble assembling it myself. For the money, I don't believe you could get any better quality even in a more expensive machine. I have very bad knees but this workout actually helps them and gives me an excellent full body workout. I recommend the Schwinn A40 to anyone.

New Year's Resolution Here I Come!
First and foremost... how do I like the machine now that it is in one piece?I love it! It's smooth, quiet, easy on the joints and simple to figure out. The machine feels completely stable, does not wobble and is quite sturdy. It gives me a ridiculous workout (I am panting right now) especially if I program it to the highest resistance, though I do give up pretty quick if I use it this way. What works best for me is the various "courses" which fluctuate the resistance so just when it gets too tough it begins stepping down and I am able to make it to my pre-programmed time.Why is this the perfect machine for me? Well, when I used to go to the gym, this machine was my kryptonite. After much research, I bought this one
***Update 12/21/2007***Well, I've had this machine for about two weeks now and it works great. I am completely satisfied with this purchase. I was a little concerned about shipping, but mine came in perfect condition. Like others, it took me little under 3 hours to put it together. If you can put a screw in and follow directions, you'll be able to put this together. The machine is so smooth and quiet. It's no problem for others in the room to watch TV at the same time. After a week, I started to notice a clicking sound and it turned out I had tightened the screw that connects the handle bar to the foot pedal bar too tight. Loosening it a little fixed the problem.***Original review*** - I should start by saying I just bought the Schwinn 431 from Amazon, but haven't received it yet so my total usage of it is only the 15 minutes or so I spent trying a demo model at a store. A great elliptical trainer for the price!
I just bought one of these from a local "Play It Again Sports" location and I must say I'm impressed with the sturdy manufacturing. (I'd recommend you ask your local store for a price. I saved $100 over Amazon's price!) It has a very smooth ride and feels very sturdy even when I ride it at a quick rate. I'm 215 lbs and I have it set up on Berber carpet and it still feels very sturdy!The assembly took me about 2 hours and it wasn't very difficult. Schwinn (er, Nautilus) did a good job of packing all of the nuts and washers in a very organized way where there is no doubt what is what. The instructions were very easy to follow and didn't require any tools other than the ones included in the box.I'm very happy with this unit. It has a wonderful selection of 20 different programs built in and has 16 levels of resistance as well. The heart rate monitor is well placed and seems to work well for me. I bought this machine to workout at home because I tend to keep strange hours and the idea of going to the gym is not appealing to me. The package was delivered by ABF Freight in perfect condition (as in no damage, the box itself was extremely filthy) but I opened it and put it together with no issues. I really like the way this machine looks and feels. I had an elliptical machine about 7 years ago that I had bought from Sears that wasn't near the quality of this machine. After assembly, I turned the machine on and it prompted me to select a program. I selected the program and when the machine went to kick on the motor/resistance, an message appeared on the screen. E-2. What does this mean? There is no troubleshooting section in the manual. After an online search of other Schwinn fitness equipment, I found out that E-2 is a pretty significant problem which involves changing the console and/or motor or who knows what else. Just got it and I love it!
This is totally worth buying! The quality is very good and it's easy to put together. I put it together mostly by myself and I'm a 21yr old female with average strength and it wasn't too hard. I did have trouble tightening a couple of bolts, but that was the hardest part, and mostly just because of the position of the bolt. Most of the pieces are together already, the pieces that need greasing were already greased. It comes with the tools you need to put it together, and the hardware is separated into what you need for each step, so there's no digging around looking for the right part.As far as the elliptical itself, it's awesome.*It has an audio input jack and comes with a cord for it, and you can either listen to music on its speakers or plug your headphones into the elliptical itself.*There's a spot were you can set your ipod or mp3 player and it also has a little book stand at the bottom of the console display.*There's a water bottle holder and it has... Excellent Economy Elliptical
I don't review many products on Amazon, but I felt the need to do so for this product. I've been very happy with my purchase, and I feel I can answer a lot of the questions I had when I was looking for what to buy. I've had this just over a month, and if anything changes in the next 6 months to a year I'll update this review to reflect that.My overall experience with this purchase was excellent. It shipped the second day after I purchased it and arrived a couple of days later. A note on the shipping method; this came by drop truck(that's the smaller delivery trucks with the elevator thing on the back), and the delivery guy was nice enough to cart the box into my house. It is VERY heavy if you're not used to lifting things, and the weight is not evenly distributed. Have some help ready or do what I did and open the box in one room and carry the pieces to the room you are assembling in.Moving this thing around after assembly is aided by built in 'wheels' on... Very nice elliptical in this price range
Tried this machine along with a similarly priced Proform and a used LifeStride. This model definitely offered smoother motion, more realistic action; on the Proform it felt like I was constantly bouncing. Has the right amount of bells/whistles for a model this price. Compared to the next Horizon model up, this one has a shorter stride at 18"; but if you are average height/stride this wont be a problem. I ordered this directly from Nautilus and just recieved it a week ago 11/11/2008.When you open the box everything is packaged very well and it honestly takes almost as long to unwrap everything and get everything out of the box as it does to assemble.It states that assembly needs two people but I was able to put it together myself without any problems. After all Men don't listen to instructions anyways right? It took about 3 hours from the moment I started cutting tape to open the box to having it fully assembled and ready to go.The elliptical looks great and is suitable for any room. Just a note about this machine. I was going to put this in my home gym which is in my basement that has 7 foot ceilings, but after halfway through assembly I realized that this elliptical will make you about 14 inches taller so just something to be aware of.I was unsure about the "Variable Stride" system and thought the description was a little vague before... Brilliant execution, disappointing concept
This is a difficult review to write because I really wanted to like this machine - there are so many good things about it. The construction is awesome, consisting of heavily overbuilt steel tubing with bronze and steel bearings on all moving parts (way outclassing any machine in its prices point), it's well engineered, everything fits well and works smoothly, it's rock solid in operation, etc. This is really a well engineered and well executed machine.The problem I have with it is in the basic concept of how the variable stride is accomplished. Basically, the "pedals" (and their associated platforms and tubes) slide over rollers that turn a bicycle style crank driving a flywheel. The sliding action drives the crank only with the friction/resistance of the pedals over the rollers - there is no direct connection to the crank.
