Amazon Exclusive: Seth Godin Reviews Rework

Seth Godin is the author of Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip, Purple Cow, All Marketers Are Liars, and Permission Marketing, as well as other international bestsellers. He is consistently one of the 25 most widely read bloggers in the English language. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of Rework:

This book will make you uncomfortable.

Depending on what you do all day, it might make you extremely uncomfortable.

That's a very good thing, because you deserve it. We all do.

Jason and David have broken all the rules and won. Again and again they've demonstrated that the regular way isn't necessarily the right way. They just don't say it, they do it. And they do it better than just about anyone has any right to expect.

This book is short, fast, sharp and ready to make a difference. It takes no prisoners, spares no quarter, and gives you no place to hide, all at the same time.

There, my review is almost as long as the first chapter of the book. I can't imagine what possible excuse you can dream up for not buying this book for every single person you work with, right now.

Signal vs. Noise in Book Form
One of my biggest gripes about the early reviews to come out about Rework is that they had no substance. Words like "inspirational", "brilliant", and "rethink" generally trigger my BS alarm, so I really didn't know what to expect with Rework. I've been reading Signal vs. Noise, the design and usability blog by 37signals, for a few years now, and I've had plenty of time to become acquainted with Jason and David's style. That I even refer to them by their first names should clue you in to their style. They come across in writing as they do in their live webcasts and presentations: familiar. Point is, I've been irked by the longest by those vapid early reviews to come out. They meant nothing to me. Hopefully you'll find this review more much helpful for determining whether or not Rework is worth your time.TL;DR Version: Buy the book if you have no idea what 37signals stands for. If you do, expect SvN on paper.Long Version: If you've never heard of 37signals or...

Excellent resource
This book is a small gold mine. I'm always looking for business services and resources, and "Startup@Cloud" presents a lot of information, organized in a very logical sequence. I've got a long list of sites I want to visit now.One caveat to books like this is that they can go out of date quickly. For example, this book references Google Wave, which is ancient history (in Internet time). But I recognized a lot of the companies mentioned in the book, and most of them are pretty well established.Oh, and to the reviewers who are always around to knock this type of book because it's "well known information" and "you can find everything in it on the web" ... okay, you know all this already and you know exactly where to find it. Got it. You're brilliant. [Applause]But what you don't seem to know is that not everyone knows it all already, and not everyone has the time to search the Internet to find it. I'm running one business and thinking of starting...

Product Description

In this booklet, you get 33 action-packed tips to get your startup running in hours. Run your company from Starbucks using only a web browser. If you're already running your company using 100% cloud-based software, you don't need Startup@Cloud; otherwise, this is for you (Booklet: 6,600 Words; Updated November 2011).

Can you:
* Get your company operating in hours instead of days, weeks or months?
* Run your company from anywhere you have Internet access?
* Rent your computing infrastructure for $50 a month instead of investing thousands in costly hardware and software?
* Use free, web-based applications to operate your business?

Absolutely, and much, much more.

Startup@Cloud is the culmination of award-winning author Paul Duvall's desire to run his software company, Stelligent, from anywhere while operating as lean as possible. Companies no longer need to be confined by location or traditional startup costs. Duvall demonstrates how anyone can get their company operating using - many of them free - cloud-based software and run their startups rather than it running them.

You will learn:
* How to run your business without downloading any software
* Use freely available web-based tools to incorporate, get a domain, manage customers and timesheets, create documents and much more
* How these tips are currently being used by a software company to run its business operations

And that's just the beginning. With 33 tips to run a lean startup, you don't have a reason to waste a day in getting your business going now.

Each tip is one to two pages using a patterns-based approach of identifying the problem, providing a solution along with action steps and providers you can use in the solution.

These tips are used by the author's company, Stelligent, and other startups that are running exclusively in the Cloud. If you want practical tips and tools on what the author is using to run his $1MM+ firm right now, this is for you. If you want theory and hand waving, you should purchase something else.

Good advice, but not really anything new
This book is filled with some great advice for those who want to start their own business, have their own business, or are just interested in the subject. As a fan of 37 Signals the company and a frequent reader of their blog, I was excited when Rework was first announced (so excited I pre-ordered it). From the initial descriptions, I was excited to read a full-length book from Jason Fried and David Heinemeir Hansson. My hope was that they would expand on the ideas frequently discussed on their blog and elaborate on some more of their personal experiences in running a very successful small company.Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the authors, their blog, or their previous book "Getting Real", then very little of the content in this book is new. All of the lessons and chapters feel like retreads of previous material, even down to some of the analogies such as "be like a chef" or "be a curator".So while I think some of the lessons in this book...

Excellent Advice for Anyone With a Passion for Their Work
I recently purchased both this book and Rework (a slightly newer version of this book) from Amazon. Both books contain invaluable information about business and development that is critical for anyone who loves excelling at their work, running their own business, or thinking of starting their own business. The book is broken up into short chapters, each only a few pages in length, that contain practical advice regarding the chapter topic.Bits of information like:- Be honest and open with your customers.- Infuse your personality into your software.- Build only the most essential features for your product. Are prevalent throughout the book, and presented in an entertaining and insightful way that really makes you question the way you work, the way your business works, and ways to do your work better.I can't recommend that you read both this AND Rework, as the material in both books is very similar, but you...

Must Read for Product Management and Marketing Professionals
Getting Real is a must read for all marketing professionals - especially those in product management! The impact Agile Development is having on product management is as revolutionary as the changes that social media are having on marketing communications. In my opinion, an alternative title for Getting Real could have been "The New Rules of Software Development," because the strategy outlined is such a radical paradigm shift. The book takes about 2-3 hours from cover-to-cover. I read the free online HTML version first, but now have purchased several copies of the hardcover for myself and colleagues. The essence of the 37 Signals design principles can be summed up nicely in a quotation by Steve Jobs' who stated about iTunes - "We don't want a thousand features. That would be ugly. Innovation is not about saying yes to everything. It's about saying NO to all but the most crucial features."The book is chalked full of sage advice about how to optimize...

Product Description

Getting Real details the business, design, programming, and marketing principles of 37signals. The book is packed with keep-it-simple insights, contrarian points of view, and unconventional approaches to software design. This is not a technical book or a design tutorial, it's a book of ideas. Anyone working on a web app - including entrepreneurs, designers, programmers, executives, or marketers - will find value and inspiration in this book. 37signals used the Getting Real process to launch five successful web-based applications (Basecamp, Campfire, Backpack, Writeboard, Ta-da List), and Ruby on Rails, an open-source web application framework, in just two years with no outside funding, no debt, and only 7 people (distributed across 7 time zones). Over 500,000 people around the world use these applications to get things done. Now you can find out how they did it and how you can do it too. It's not as hard as you think if you Get Real. Solid, inspirational information if you're building software
I really enjoyed reading 'Getting Real' because I felt like it allowed me to let go of preconceptions about what software should and shouldn't be. Overall, I felt like the information was extremely practical and in many ways enlightening, though at times I did feel like the authors staunch resistance to outside influence was a little extreme. If you're in the process of building web-based software, I would recommend this book highly (and have) over their more recent title 'ReWork'. Both books are cut from the same cloth, but ReWork is definitely more general in it's approach and made into a picture book. Both contain almost the exact same information, it's just that 'Getting Real' seemed to have more gems worth highlighting and sharing with my team. The only reason I didn't rate this book 5 stars, though it probably deserves it, is the fairly extreme outlook of choosing no features over features and remaining closed off from outside (user) influence. But what do I know, I'm not the...

This Will Change the Fabric of Society as We Know It
The title may seem over the top, but actually the implications of Eric's new book are huge. I can't remember a text in recent years that predicted such significant conclusions for society, education, and world business.**Concepts in the book that will make your head spin:1) Ries's Law (I'm coining this right now) - Moore's Law that states the cost of new technology will rapidly decrease thereby reducing technological risk of innovation. It's not until The Lean Startup that we realize the cost of reaching customers and thereby market risk will also rapidly decrease.2) Entrepreneur mythology as we know it is wrong (aka Steve Jobs is not what he seems). Iconic innovators ala the founders of Apple are believed by the public to be successful because of their creative vision of the future. The Lean Startup shows that in order for founders to be successful, they must test each element of there vision against reality.3) Demystifying startup...

The elixir for eternal youth! - for the Startup
Winston Churchill once said that we can depend on the United states to do the right thing - after they have exhausted all other alternatives. The same can be said for the startup company in cutting edge fields - they have to keep trying so many different options on the various product features, target market segments, pricing, technology architecture, and so on before they hit upon the right formula. And since companies will not have the necessary resources to try out the various permutations and combinations, most of them fail before they achieve success; unless they are phenomenally lucky. But Eric Ries in his book `The Lean Startup' shows that it doesn't have to be so. He explains that startups cannot use traditional planning an management tools because their product and customers are unknown. So, what else? Here he comes up with his Lean Startup Methodology - which is a scientific approach for creating and managing startups. Since the product and customer are not known,...

Very Useful for Anyone Starting A Business
As of the writing of this review (August 2011), the US economy is still in pretty bad shape, banks aren't lending and companies are sitting on piles of cash. It's a perfect time to launch a startup, but capital is scarce. Fortunately, there are options for aspiring entrepreneurs. The Lean Startup by Eric Ries (co-founder of internet company IMVU) is a great place to begin. When I first received the book I was a little concerned that it would be more focused on brick and mortar businesses to the exclusion of internet and content type startups. However, Ries focuses on a variety of entrepreneurial situations from traditional, physical businesses to those only existent on the web. If you are operating a business or thinking about starting one, chances are Ries has addressed your situation in some capacity within the book's 290+ pages. The Lean Startup is filled with technical information, but also interesting stories that back up the author's assertions. I like this...

Product Description

Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable.  The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched.

Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business.

The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively.  Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on “validated learning,” rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counter-intuitive practices that shorten product development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute.

Rather than wasting time creating elaborate business plans, The Lean Startup offers entrepreneurs - in companies of all sizes - a way to test their vision continuously, to adapt and adjust before it’s too late. Ries provides a scientific approach to creating and managing successful startups in a age when companies need to innovate more than ever.

Sometimes you may be asked to cut down the requirement capture time my argument to that would be “If you cannot invest in getting the requirements done right the first time, how are you going to afford the cost and time that would be required to... You can look forward to the following topics in the series of requirement capture and analysis – Documenting Requirements , Common problems encountered during requirement analysis. Because fixing requirements errors accounts for 70% to 80% of your rework costs (Leffingwell, 1997). Tips for Requirement Analysis The requirement analysis and capture process should result in documentation which will cover the following aspects:. Importance of Requirement Analysis We all know that requirements need to gathered before any software development project. Define what the solution should and should not do. You should not only define what the solution should do but also define what the solution will not do. The requirements should be stated in a manner that nothing is left for imagination or which... Now that we understand how important it is to get the requirements right early on. Go and get your requirements right the first time…. Apart from answering the above questions a high level description of the solution which needs to be developed and the business needs it is going to address needs to be documented. The requirement Analyst needs to understand the problem and the need for solution. You also need to understand the needs of the people who are ultimately going to use the solution / system.
