A wonderfull book on pheasants and pheasant habitat
Every pheasant population has limits to its growth placed by its niche in a larger ecology. Only one large brained vertebrate seems unconstrained by the general rule. For those of us who want to know more about limits to the growth of pheasant populations, and about the life of pheasants at all seasons, Dr. Peter Robertson's "Pheasants" is a must buy. This is a brilliant book and is highly recommenedBird and wildlife lovers who are not specifically interested in pheasants should read this book, not only because, as Robertson explains, good pheasant habitat is good wildlife habitat for the whole range of small creatures of the woods and fields. This book can lead to a deeper understanding of wildlife habitat in general, and of how a habitat supports and limits the populations of wildlife species. This book is an absolute must for all pheasant habitat managers and their superiors in the state agencies. An understanding of the book's central themes could increase the...

Pheasants of the World
An excellent book. Tends to focus more on the individual pheasant breeds rather than thier care and raising of them. However, probably one of the most in-depth books on the many beautiful species of pheasants worldwide.

Excellent!!
Excellent detail on many breeds of pheasant. Tells of their origins, species relations, possible hybrids in the wild and a chart of possible hydrids in captivity. Not a good book to learn of the special perks to raising these birds but still great on knowledge of where they came from.Michael Burton

Excellent book on the subject
Very good book with detailed and updated information regarding biology and status of each species comprised in this group of birds. Also some interesting prints from Elliot's Monograph plus a good number of photos and interesting drawings by the author.

An Adult's Review
A quick read... (Also called The Mystery of Pheasant Cottage)Lucy lives with her grandparents - her mother's father and mother. Her mother died when she was born and her father isn't part of her life. She overhears a conversation that leads her to discoveries, especially with the help of her new friend Ron.Lucy, through the help of an old woman who doesn't speak English, learns what a relationship with Jesus is. Lucy, in turn, shares that with someone else. The writing is good and is never preachy. It is a child's book but I enjoyed it. Something I might want to read to the youngsters at school. The ending is better than the beginning of the story. I appreciate the way the author didn't drag from one event to the next, making us live through tedium in the everyday detail.

small word of caution
My 10 year old daughter and I read this story together, and she absolutely loved it, always requesting one more chapter. The story is well written and engaging, involving loving relationships and forgiveness. My only word of caution would be that there is the inclusion of alcohol consumption in the later chapters. While this was not a concern for my family, some families may wish to be aware of this content prior to purchase.

I loved this book. There is a mystery that will surprize you by it's ending.

Great Sounds
These birds are wonderful with individual sounds but one of my dogs keeps breaking them because he's tired of the repeated bird calls! They are so cute and the other dogs love them and take care of them. Bad dog!

I have never been a fan of squirrel meat or squirrel hunting, but the juxtaposition of this beautiful and intelligent city girl waxing poetic about her love of the nutty flavor of squirrel meat has made me anxious for September’s squirrel season. however, it’s Georgia’s own thoughts about hunting for food that resonated most for me.   In particular, the book’s last chapter about squirrel hunting stands out.    The end of each chapter also features a handful of recipes associated with the game she pursued during the chapter.

Average Nest Initiation Date: May 1 ( beginning as early as March 15 running through July 15  . Photo period is the top factor influencing when pheasants begin nesting. If a hen loses her nest due to cold weather, predation, haying, flooding, or some other disturbance, she will attempt to re-nest up to two more times.   As a result, the healthier the hens are coming out of the winter, the better the chances for nest success during these re-nesting efforts as well.   Egg laying, nesting, re-nesting and brood-rearing are very taxing on hens.   Consequently, a mild winter allows hens to begin the spring reproduction season in top shape with the ability to produce the maximum number of eggs per clutch (the average clutch size of eggs is 12). If the weather through April, May and June continues to be warm and relatively dry, then hen pheasants will have a high probably of pulling off successful first nesting attempts prior to haying season.   Consequently, both Wooley and Kuehl believe the early spring could accelerate the pheasant nesting season by a few days.   A second effort will average eight eggs in a clutch, while a third re-nesting generally produces four to six eggs.   In fact, most western biologists will point to the need for spring moisture to “green” things up for insect production as the more important factor influencing their pheasant recruitment success.

I like the nice, sunny, 50-degree pheasant hunt as much as the next guy. I would say thats what pheasant hunting is all about. Have you been on a harrowing pheasant hunt. ) pheasant hunt. At times I wondered if I really wanted a Pheasant that bad. Once in South Dakota and, well, again in Ohio, I was talked into hunting in a literal downpour in 30-degree weather. On the Dakota ordeal, we should have called the local fire department to come out for a hypothermia check with us. It was that bad, the kind of driving rain where you had to turn your face to keep the sleet from stinging your skin, which was... As we rounded a corner in swift stream, we were pulled against a culvert/bridge and I hung on, but my wife and dog were sucked under with the kayak and pulled through before popping up downstream. I use good gear, but in that subzero wind, if I hadn’t kept moving, the cold, white hand of death was ready to grab me quick. This time, however, I was ready for old Mother Nature with gonzo gear and then some…I didn’t get the slightest bit wet or cold. The reason I tried to get out of this hunt was I didn’t have along my usual waterproof pants, so I quickly got soaked. It was what we call in the damp Midwest a “cloud burst,” that is, the cloud explodes and all the rain comes dumping down in buckets. I’m a good sized guy that generates a lot of heat and holds it in well when moving about. One good thing: As the pants froze and stiffened, they kept me from tipping over when I felt faint.

Six-Word Pheasant Hunting Tales Sometimes the best pheasant hunts are short and sweet, but what about the best pheasant hunting stories. The PF editors will select the top ones to appear in Pheasants Forever’s upcoming Pheasant Hunting Preview magazine.
