easy, accurate, durable, : Fluke ...
I'm not married to any particular brand of meter, but every time I trust Fluke I am pleased. This meter looks cool. It feels right in the hand. It is incredibly simple to use, and very accurate.I pitted this meter against reference standard equipment, and the unit was dead on on everything. It's a pleasure to pull something out of the box, and have it be dead nuts on every time.I might have gotten an exceptional sample, but the unit I own is very accurate. This meter is a general electrical testing device. It is a logical alternative wherever a general purpose portable meter would be used.I like the white back light, and the yellow holster. The labeling makes good common sense. The meter is well protected against overloads. In case you forget to turn the dial to 'A', and then feed current into the meter, or you do switch the dial to 'A', but forget to switch the lead to amps, the meter tells you.

I graduated to the best
For a few years now, I have been running a small business repairing electronic pinball machines. A digital meter is essential for checking the various components, voltages and circuits. I was using a less expensive Craftsman meter that worked fine for me but wanted something smaller. I tried another Craftsman, but it just did not make me feel confident in its readings.So I bit the bullet to purchase this "over $100" unit and have no regrets. The feel of this meter was just right in my hand. The readings felt much more solid/consistent. For example, the window not only shows a number, but a scaling line which made comparing voltages quicker.I already had some experience with the various settings, but using this meter made it exciting to explore some of the other settings that I never used. I feel like I am advancing my skill set which is always a satisfying experience. There also seems to be a little sense of pride when using a more professional product...

Yep, this one is a keeper
I too, replaced several old Craftsman meters with this one. I should have gone with Fluke several years ago: Accurate, simple, and 'does everything". The DC ma range can handle all the way from 200ma to 1A, while most can't handle above 200ma which is a range I need. This is the one to own.

Can't add much to what has already been said
I originally bought the Extech EX330 which I was attracted to because it has a thermocouple and a lot lower price. However, I got a defective unit and realized why it was so much less expensive, At that point I decided to make the investment in a meter that I hope will last me many years. It was a lot more expensive, but you get what you pay for.Regarding the comment that it is not the quality of older Fluke meters, I probably should have bought a Fluke and saved going through a series of meters that last a hand-full of years and then hit the trash can. Comparing it to my old meters, it seems to be a very well-built instrument.

Replacement for my Fluke 12
My trusty Model 12 took a drop that blew a chunk out of its case. My employer bought me a 117 to replace it. Sweet. 0.1 Mv resolution, freq up to 9999HZ, back lighting, non contact voltage scanning, ect.I like this meter. The old twelve is now patched up with some epoxy putty and in the trunk of my car. PROS:1. Fluke's famous quality, durability and accuracy.2. Fluke finally made the battery replacement easy. The 9 Volt battery compartment is under the stand's flap fastened with only one small screw.CONS:1. The new holster is skimpy - it leaves part of the front panel and the knob exposed and prone to damage, should the meter fall. The old Fluke holsters used to be more bulletproof.2. Made in CHlNA. Fluke stuff used to be made in USA only. Why everything on US market has to be made in CHlNA now? Not good.3. The biggest CON for me is the display's much lower contrast than it used to be in old Fluke meters (like Fluke model 12). The background is really dark and it makes it hard to see the digits. OK, the new meters have backlight but who will use it constantly and waste the battery?I threw the manual booklet away and downloaded it in PDF file from Fluke's support website.Overall: nice product...

Absolutely Top-Quality
First, Fluke itself: Fluke makes best-quality meters. In fact, they are overwhelmingly regarded as the best meters available. That's not to say there aren't other very good brands (e.g., Agilent, Hioki), or that 2nd tier brands (e.g., Extech, Meterman) don't have their place - they do. But Fluke meters in general offer the combination of best specifications, best build, and best protection (for you as well as the meter). The thing is, you will pay top dollar.The 87 is a very tough meter in very widespread use in the field. The 80 series meters, like the 70 series that preceeded them, have a reputation for holding their accuracy and lasting for decades. They are well-fused and well-shielded, tightly-sealed, and stories of Fluke meters surviving falls, high voltages and currents, weather, and a myriad of other challenges are legion.Look carefully at specs and responsiveness. don't waste your money on Cheap meters!
I have been in the RV repair industry for a long time and one thing is for sure, I cannot do my job without a top quality meter. I have in the past bought Snap-On, Mac, Matco,ect, but have never been as pleased with a meter as I have with this one. Beyond the normal functions of a meter, I love this one for its temp probe, no more are the days of carrying a therometer to take readings inside fride, a/c/ unit, all I do is plug it into the meter put the probe inside and shut the door within 30 seconds I have a very accurate reading. But probably the most important thing about this merter is the "true RMS" readings I get, this is very important when working with power converters and inverters..This meter is very well protected also with fuses (fuses are pricey though) have not blown one yet but I would recommend purchasing a set to keep on hand.

Nearly perfect multimeter
The 87 has evolved little since 1989 yet it remains a preferred and widely used meter for professional electric and electronic work, over 20 years later. Its very rare to have any design in production for decades yet still command a top price despite competition from cheaper work a like multimeters. The 87 look, feel and functionality, remains often copied even today. While the 87 has changed backlighting, added 20,000 count precision, increased LCD annunciators, louder beeps, new button colors etc., it didn't markedly improve overall accuracy, reliability, build quality, safety, and ease of maintenance that gave the whole 80 series its reputation. You can still find 1-4 80 series meters on eBay commanding top prices [often as much or more than similar functioned new non-Fluke DMMs ] and often need just cleaning, to look near new.I own a 20+ year old 85I, a 10 year old 85III and a 3 year old 87V. Fluke dmm,safty test leads, and 80bk thermo probe only
this is an excellent buy for the meter only, there are no extra's like the combo pack one's so for a first time buy, I would recommend one of the combo packs from $240 - $270. But if you already owned a fluke dmm and needed to replace it this is the perfect purchase.

Fluke 179 vs Fluke 87-5
General comments:The Fluke 179 is an excellent meter and I've used it for serious electronics hobby work for a couple of years now including measuring very high AC / DC voltages and currents. It's extremely accurate, reliable, and has several functions (measurements) it can do very well. The ergonomic case design and the fact that the holster is integrated into the case design make it durable, compact, and easy to work with, this one thing is what the 179 has over the 87-5. When I first got the 179, the beeper went out, I contact Fluke, sent it back to them, they repaired it no charge and even calibrated it for free! So you have excellent support from Fluke with the lifetime warranty on this meter. Great meter-No case or hanging strap
First, the bad. I find the ESFP (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese) acronym to be misleading. All this means is that the manual has ESFP instructions. Also, why is there the ability to measure Hz in the Vdc position (ha)? Lastly, Fluke should include a case and a hanging strap but they don't. Come on Fluke, what would this cost you...5 bucks (for 5 stars)?Now the good. Well made, durable...should last for many years. Super accurate...meter readings can be trusted. Ability to measure temperature...takes a while (5 minutes) to stabilize but a cool feature (ha). Ability to measure up to 100kHz...I use this feature a lot with laptops to see if the CCFL backlight inverter is working. I don't even have to make electrical contact...the leads of the 179 act as an antenna and pick up on the EMI field if the inverter is working. Note: Some CCFL data sheets I've seen spec 60kHz and most meters only go up to 50kHz, if that. Continuity test function very quick...will sense opens/shorts...

Great Multimeter for Troubleshooting Wiring Problems
I had this Fluke 114 multimeter for over 1 ½ years now and it has become my most used multimeter (even though it is also my least expensive multimeter). This multimeter has all the functions needed to troubleshoot electric wiring problems on buildings, ships, and airplanes and has the important AUTO-V LoZ function that many higher-priced Fluke multifunction multimeters lack.The AUTO-V LoZ function eliminates false readings that can severely hinder troubleshooting efforts. The normal multimeter volt functions have a high impedance input that makes it too sensitive for troubleshooting wiring faults. An open-ended wire under test that is near other powered wires will pick up the electromagnetic force fields from the other wires and show a false "ghost" voltage on the wire under test. The low impedance input of the AUTO-V LoZ function will eliminate the measuring of these false voltages. The Fluke 114 has the AUTO-V LoZ function and also has the normal high impedance volt...

Best idea ever!
I am a heavy multimeter user. I teach electricity and electronics classes and now that I have been using these little clips for a while, I can't live without them. They are high quality. They just slide onto the ends of my existing leads, and they can be removed just as easily when I want the regular leads back. I was worried that they would loosen up over time and start falling off of the ends of the leads, but after 1 1/2 years of using them, they grip just as well as the day I bought them. I highly recommend them!

Great clips
I fiddled around with off-brand clips for years w my Fluke 77. They never stay put on the probes or made reliable contacts. These have high quality insulation, thick yet pliable, and the probe tip inserts easily, makes good contact, and stay put.Should have bought them years ago.Buy these and don't waste your time.
