Outstanding radio
I have been into CB radios since they first came out. I also have 50 year experience as a ham radio operator and an electrical engineer. I have never had a better CB radio. I purchased a second one just to have in years to come as a spare. I use it every day-it has very low crosstalk from high power CB transmitters nearby on the Interstate. Can't beat it for the $ Jay

Great little basic CB!
So, you're sitting there viewing this page in your browser, perhaps with a look of doubt in your face. That's why you've scrolled down here to the reviews. You're thinking to yourself "A $30 CB? It can't be worth a flip, right?". I tell ya what, I was thinking the same thing. But I gave it a shot and installed it in my wife's little '97 Corolla a few days ago, and so far I've been pretty impressed. When I pulled it out of its box, my first thought was "Wow, cheap". And indeed it is. Its plastic case has almost no weight to it. The knobs and switches have the tactile feedback of a dirt-cheap appliance from Wal-Mart. Being the ham radio geek that I am, the first thing I did was pull out my trusty phillips screwdriver and open the case. More cheapness on the inside, all of the components no doubt obtained from the lowest bidder somewhere in Asia. However, I didn't see any sign of shoddy manufacturing that I've seen in other super-cheap products. No solder marbles...

Great Bang For The Buck!
I purchased this radio new on Amazon for about 26 bucks delivered; not a bad price for any CB that is in working order, new or used! So there is value here! The first radio I received was defective; the receive section totally lost it's sensitivity after a few minutes of turning the radio on, and it was easily replaced with a fully functioning one. As one who enjoys "big" rig equipment, the compact size in this case allowed me to install it within the space beneath a removable tray in my car. Using a good quality extension speaker did the trick; but the radio has surprisingly good audio quality and volume from its internal speaker. An added bonus that NONE of the sellers; even the manufacturer ever mentions is that this rig does have an RF Gain control, a feature NEVER seen in a radio at this price point. Another thing I am impressed with is the fact that the squelch control actually works properly; set it for a particular threshold, and it will allow signals to pass selectively based...

Great Radio!
This Radio worked better than advertised!!! Our main purpose for buying this was to be alerted for severe weather during our crosscountry road trip durning the month of May. The biggest selling point was the fact the radio would turn on if a weather alert was transmitted in your area. The second day on the road we came out to the car after dinner to find the radio on and transmitting a weather alert. It saved us from heading directly into the upcoming storm. This was also very helpful to find out about traffic problems and we used it twice to alert fellow drivers of dangers in the road. I can not recommend this highly enough!!! I will always travel with this radio!!!

Great CB radio, nice features and easy operation
I've owned a few CB radios in my time and this one by far is the best. I really like the features and the fact the radio can assist with tuning of the antenna which if not correctly tuned affects the transmission and reception of the radio and can cause permanent damage to a CB radio. The display with its choice of colors is also quite nice and so easy to see. Directly after installing I found my antenna needed a tweak and once tunned my reception was fantastic and people told me how clear my transmissions were. I also like the NOAA weather channels and the fact the radio will sound an alert if there is a severe weather warning. I also connected a PA horn and tried that feature which allows for a very loud broadcast with a simple press of the PA button.

Full Feature, great price
All the complaints I've read about this scanner are pretty pointless. This is the best Hand Held scanner I've ever owned. Go to Sears or Best Buy, see what HH CB's they have in, Probably just one, the Cobra 37 ST. Does that have channel scan, 5 memories, memory scan, freq. display, REAL mobile adpater not just a car power cord, NOPE. How much do they want? $40 in Best buy, and get this, $79.99 in sears, check their website. The problems with range come with any handheld. I dont see the problem, take any hand held in a car and its range will go way down, But midland is only company that provides you with an external antenna hookup/power cord combined and make your radio the size of most mic's, you cant go wrong. The best you'll get from others is a DC power cable, but no way to connect an external car antenna to it. and they will still be full length. You could also MOD this unit to pick up 120 channels CB (all you need to do is solder one connection...) if your more experienced,...

Compact, reliable, great battery life
I couldn't be much happier with this unit. Where it really shines is in battery life. I've used this in various 4x4 competitions and my teammates use some much larger, clunky handhelds that require 10 batteries and eat them up quick (several sets in a weekend). I use 6 nicads in my midland unit and they last and last. Its a pretty decent mobile unit too with the adapter. With an external antenna the range is tremendously improved. My only real complaint is that I wish that there was a way to lock the backlighting on when using the car adapter - this would make it easier to use at night.

compact and versatile
This is a very compact, well designed, and versatile unit that can be easily moved from one vehicle to another or used as a handi-talkie. The number of useful features and sensitivity of the receiver pleasantly surprised me. With an external antenna, I found the NOAA weather band usable with broadcasts 50 miles distant and the CB effective at five miles. Adjacent channel selectivity is quite good. Perhaps the only limitation in this unit is the relatively low audio output that might require near maximum volume when the windows are open at highway speeds. But, audio quality is very good with no distortion even at maximum volume.

Product Description

Midland Micro 40CH Hand held CB Top to learn more

Having a CB radio while traveling can be an invaluable tool for emergencies and for keeping up on road conditions, and the Midland 75-820 40-channel handheld CB is one you should definitely consider. It comes with everything you need to get started in a hurry, including a battery pack for times you want to run the unit on six AA batteries and a cigarette lighter adapter for battery-free operation in your car.

The Midland 75-820's design is ideal, with a push-to-talk button on the side, squelch and volume knobs, and a small LCD screen that displays the current channel, signal strength, and a variety of other useful information. Several buttons on the device can be used for scanning, whether quickly flipping between the emergency channel (9) and the standard highway channel (19) or activating the LCD's backlight. The unit also comes with a short, flexible antenna.

Overall, the 75-820's portability is excellent--comparable to a child's walkie-talkie. Unfortunately, the unit's compactness hampers its usefulness, because the relatively small antenna has a hard time pulling in distant signals. In our tests on local highways and on the interstate, transmissions rarely could be heard from more than half a mile away. However, when we connected the Midland 75-822 to a whip antenna that was several feet long, the range increased considerably. As a result, we recommend investing in a better antenna before using the device in your car, although the radio still works well for communicating with nearby semis when you're trying to find out the source of a traffic jam.

We had better luck using the radio to monitor National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio broadcasts, which we were able to receive from nearly anywhere since Weather Radio stations transmit at much higher power than mobile transmitters. These broadcasts are repeated every few minutes, are updated every few hours, and can help alert travelers to severe weather conditions. It's a nice feature to have on a portable CB and makes the Midland 75-822 a standout choice for travelers who want to be in the know. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Truly portable
  • Car adapter kit included
  • Ability to monitor Weather Radio is a nice touch
Cons:
  • Short antenna dramatically cuts down on range

40-Channel CB Radio

The 75-822 offers 40 separate communication channels, delivering the maximum CB communication range with 4 watts of output power.

You can also store and instantly access up to five of your favorite channels in memory. When you flip on the device, a last channel memory feature will turn on the last channel you selected before powering off.

While communicating, a built in ANL (automatic noise limiter) improves reception for weak signals, and squelch control further eliminates background noise.

Weather Radio/Emergency Channel Convenience

The 75-822 features instant access to NOAA Weather Radio, for weather/hazard information in your area 24/7. Immediate access to emergency channel 9 and informational channel 19 is also provided. The Dual Watch feature lets you monitor channel 9 and another channel of your choice simultaneously.

Power With AA Batteries or Vehicle Power Port

You can power this unit with six AA batteries, complete with a battery life extender feature. To get even more from your batteries, high/low transmit power settings are provided (4 watts and 1 watt, respectively).

A mobile adapter is also included for powering directly from your vehicle's "cigarette lighter" power port.

Easy to Use

The 75-822 boasts a large, backlit multifucntion LCD display that's easy to read, day or night. A keypad lock feature "locks in" your preferred settings, so they aren't accidentally changed. The flexible antenna with BNC connector is easily removed for transport, and an external headset jack is provided for hands-free use.

Radio is unbelievable!!!!
I had bought this radio at a Radio Shack store in town when we went to visit my dad in Indiana last Christmas. I had only bought it because my old Radio Shack cb I have had for about 8 1/2 years had died on me on the way there. I Bought the 520Xl and hooked it up to my SWR meter with my 3 ft Firestik antenna with magnet mount I had on the back, and right off, i never had to make an adjustment at all, because I had a SWR reading between 1:0 and 1:5. I used this radio on the way back, and was able to reach people up to 5 miles away, which was great! unfortunatly on the way back, I had to take my antenna off because everytime a semi passed us on the road, it would blow my antenna off the truck. When I got home, I took my CB to a cb shop near by and had it peaked and tuned, so now it gets 14 watts out instead of 7, and I can talk over 15-20 miles on a clear day. I did however switch antennas to a K40 3 ft antenna with adjustable sleeve that I had for years, and it works about the same...

Great radio in a small package.
This is a very nice CB in a small package. It installed under the dash and did not get in the way. Do not be misled by the compact size and low price. The final output power of the Uniden Pro520xl is four watts, the maximum allowed by the FCC for CB radios. All CB radios are rated at a maximum four watts, including the larger more expensive models. With the larger more expensive radios you only get more features, such as analog meters and fancy lights that you cannot see while driving anyway. The trade off is that the larger radios are much more difficult to install in late model cars, SUVs and trucks. The pro 520xl features subdued modern styling and does not look like a left over from the 1970s. The controls are conviently located and easy to use while driving. A draw back, however, was the short microphone cord that took some getting used to. If you buy this or any other CB radio, do not use a "cel-phone" style glass mounted antenna. The glue on antennas look good but are very...

Compact, Inexpensive, Reliable
OVERVIEW I had this radio in my Dodge truck. It tucked nice under the dash and was a great performer. Power was good as well as reception. Great Buy! POWER Any CB you purchase is limited to 4 watts output power so dont let size fool you. ALL CB'S are limited to 4 watts due to FCC regulations, look it up! PRICE The price on this site is high retail to say the least. I purchased this unit from Wal-Mart for 35 dollars. SIZE This will not take up a bunch of in-cab space that you dont have to spare due to manual tranmissions and transfer case levers. It tucks away nice and doesnt get in the way.

Good basic unit for the money
The 19 DX IV is a great little CB for the money. Yes, like a previous reviewer said, it does reset to channel 1 each time the power is cut, but....there's an instant channel 9/19 button. So with two little taps, your on 19, no big deal. This is a great unit for someone who just wants a basic unit to monitor highway conditions while travelling. It's also good for someone who wants to have a CB for emergencies but wants a step up from one of those useless emergency CBs like you used to see marketed a while back. Finally, yes, it's great for off-roaders who want a basic CB that can fit in the tight interior of a jeep or smaller truck. As with any CB, the antenna makes the big difference. Pair this with a Wilson Little Wil magnet mount antenna and you have a solid performing combo for routine CB use.

works as I suspected
To me this radio works better than the small two way radios, thats why I bought it. Yes it's a little bigger than the 2 way radios, but what I really wanted was more clearly transmission and a longer range which is what I got.

Truly Portable Handheld CB Radio

40-Channel CB Radio

The 75-785 offers 40 separate communication channels, delivering the maximum CB communication range with 4 watts of output power. Tune in with pinpoint accuracy using on-board PLL channel selection.

While communicating, a built in ANL (automatic noise limiter) improves reception for weak signals, and squelch control further eliminates background noise. Transmissions on your end should be crystal-clear as well, thanks to the built-in electrostat microphone.

Powering Options

You can power the 75-785 with nine AA alkaline batteries for use on the go. Alternately, fill it with rechargeable nickel cadmium AAs, and use the charge jack to recharge them all without removing them from the radio.

Additionally, a DC charger is included for use with "cigarette lighter" power adapters in cars, trucks, boats, etc.

External Accessory Jack

Add Midland accesories, such as an external speaker box or headset mic, using this jack.

for those complaining of poor transmission power
I think you're missing a fundamental fact about handheld radios. They don't work well inside of a car. For people who are used to mobile CB's with an external antenna, of much greater length, sitting out on top of the car and using the body of the car as a ground plane... you just can't compare that to a handheld. You're going to hate it. If you're inside of the car, the metal body of the car is destroying most of your transmission. You need to get the antenna outside of the car. If that means getting the necessary adapters and wiring your handheld to a magnetic mount antenna on your roof, then so be it. You will find you radio is getting out MUCH farther with that external antenna.
