bonds should be a part of every portfolio
annette thau's "bond book" should be read by every investor who's ever been captivated by the allure of equities and consequently neglected fixed income investments. thau delivers a crystal clear overview of every aspect of the bond market itself, as well as introduces the personalities and traits of the various types of bonds. the third edition of this book also offers the reader an insightful look at the 2008 financial crisis from the perspective of an experienced bond analyst. this is the perfect book to learn about bonds.first, it is very common for people to overestimate their risk tolerance. like many investors with a long time horizon, i initially toyed with the notion of 100% stocks for the long run (cha-ching!). if retirement is far far away, you should just have no fear, right? or so i naively thought at first. most people need to experience a bad bear market where they sell their stocks low before coming to the sad realization that they needed bonds in their...

The right balance in a finance book
This book fulfills the authors stated purpose to write a comprehensive book on bond without getting mired in MBA speak. The author certainly has plenty of (Wall) street cred. She does a very good job of detailing "risk" in bond which is often overlooked by those not familiar with fixed income instruments. I bought it primarily as a reference but it is eminently readable as well. Another excellent book on bonds is, "The Only Guide to a Winning Bond Strategy...." by, Larry Swedroe. Despite the somewhat inflated title it is also a good no-nonsense book as are all of Larry's previous offerings.

Belongs in every investor's library
I read what I believe was the first edition of this book quite a few years ago. Oddly, I don't know what ever became of it.I just finished reading the Kindle version of the current edition which served as a refresher of everything I've learned about fixed-income investing over the years. While the book probably isn't for the "professional", it will serve as a valuable tool for the beginning investor or anyone who wants to learn more about fixed-income investing. This is not some "rah, rah, rah, everything is fine" book written by someone with a vested interest in getting investors to line up to buy the latest product. Instead, it provides a very factual and candid explanation of just about every fixed income product an investor would want to buy....and many that they should stay far away from. This revised edition was written just after the 2008 "financial crisis" and gives quite a bit of background information as to its causes. It should...

The bond buyer’s answer book—updated for the new economy

“As in the first two editions, this third edition of The Bond Book continues to be the ideal reference for the individual investor. It has all the necessary details, well explained and illustrated without excessive mathematics. In addition to providing this essential content, it is extremely well written.”
—James B. Cloonan, Chairman, American Association of Individual Investors

“Annette Thau makes the bond market interesting, approachable, and clear. As much as investors will continue to depend on fixed-income securities during their retirement years, they’ll need an insightful guide that ensures they’re appropriately educated and served. The Bond Book does just that.”
—Jeff Tjornejoh, Research Director, U.S. and Canada, Lipper, Thomson Reuters

“Not only a practical and easy-to-understand guide for the novice, but also a comprehensive reference for professionals. Annette Thau provides the steps to climb to the top of the bond investment ladder. The Bond Book should be a permanent fixture in any investment library!”
—Thomas J. Herzfeld, President, Thomas Herzfeld Advisors, Inc.

“If the financial crisis of recent years has taught us anything, it’s buyer beware. Fact is, bonds can be just as risky as stocks. That’s why Annette Thau’s new edition of The Bond Book is essential reading for investors who want to know exactly what’s in their portfolios. It also serves as an excellent guide for those of us who are getting older and need to diversify into fixed income.”
—Jean Gruss, Southwest Florida Editor, Gulf Coast Business Review, and former Managing Editor, Kiplinger’s Retirement Report

About the Book

The financial crisis of 2008 caused major disruptions to every sector of the bond market and left even the savviest investors confused about the safety of their investments. To serve these investors and anyone looking to explore opportunities in fixed-income investing, former bond analyst Annette Thau builds on the features and authority that made the first two editions bestsellers in the thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded third edition of The Bond Book.

This is a one-stop resource for both seasoned bond investors looking for the latest information on the fixed-income market and equities investors planning to diversify their holdings. Writing in plain English, Thau presents cutting-edge strategies for making the best bond-investing decisions, while explaining how to assess risks and opportunities. She also includes up-to-date listings of online resources with bond prices and other information. Look to this all-in-one guide for information on such critical topics as:

  • Buying individual bonds or bond funds
  • The ins and outs of open-end funds, closed-end funds, and exchangetraded funds (ETFs)
  • The new landscape for municipal bonds: the changed rating scales, the near demise of bond insurance, and Build America Bonds (BABs)
  • The safest bond funds
  • Junk bonds (and emerging market bonds)
  • Buying Treasuries without paying a commission

From how bonds work to how to buy and sell them to what to expect from them, The Bond Book, third edition, is a must-read for individual investors and financial advisers who want to enhance the fixed-income allocation of their portfolios.

Kevin O'Reilly, New York City
If you invest at all, you should own this book. It is a comprehensive reference book on bonds that tells you everything you need to know about them and more. It is well written and easy to understand. The authors are indeed experts who do not dazzle you with jargon. They make a compelling case that one need not "diversify" one's portfolio to have steady reliable income in all financial conditions and that a carefully constructed bond portfolio can produce reliable income and growth without all the angst normally associated with investing. If you know other good investments, fine, but it is unlikely that you will have more secure investments and this book should convince you to at least put some of your assets into bonds.

Bonds: The Unbeaten Path to Secure Investment Growth
Excellent! The authors use the word "heresy" when challenging the long held notion that diversity (i.e. multiple asset classes) is not the key to success. Well heretic that I am I took the advice from their first edition and here I am so much better off than my investment cronies -- entrenched in their thinking of diversification with equities at the core. This book has nicely updated the condition in the financial world over the last four years. I love how they've put bond funds in their proper place as "quasi-equities". Also, the case study in Chapter 3 brings in practical insight. Nice work!

Best Book I've Seen on Bond Investing
I've seen many books and articles on bond investing- this one is by far the best in many ways, among them, the most comprehensive- 333 pages packed with useful information- I didnt think anyone could write 333 pages about bonds, which before reading the book I thought would require less study than stock investing, but the author did, writing 333 useful pages on the subject, and in easy to understand, conversation-like language. When I research anything I do it in breadth and depth, asking many questions, and there was no question that the author left unanswered, and then some that I had'nt thought to ask. The book also covers other related investing subjects, such as other sources of fixed income, asset allocation etc etc. There is so much information packed into the book, that not only novice bond investors would profit from it, so would experienced bond investors. I have always aggressively invested in stocks only, but given the current state of the stock market, I'm looking for...

I ordered 2 books on bond investing. Luckily, Bond Investing for Dummies arrived first. It was easy to read, and provided a great overview. It is an excellent foundation for understanding different bond types and bond strategies. I'm reading the second bond investing book now. It is written by a professor and reads like a text book. If I had not read Bond Investing for Dummies first, the second book would be difficult to comprehend. I highly recommend this book.

A good read for a beginner but hopelessly out-of-date...
... this is good starting place for the beginning bond investor because it provides a lot of basic concepts. So why only 3 stars? First, the book is very, very repetitive. This is either good or bad. If you find this type of information difficult, the repetitiveness may add to your clarity. Second, unlike other Dummies books, it is somewhat disorganized. The author uses terms and then defines them a few pages later (if a all). He also drops ideas on you only to tell you "I'll explain this later in Chapter ..." which - if you want to gain a real understanding - leaves you chasing all over the book to get the otherwise above-average content. Perhaps the biggest drawback is that it was written in 2007, just as the Bush recession was beginning. Therefore, you need to continuously reapply the information in your head - adding in newer, more relevant information from our other readings - to make it in anyway contemporary. So, get this book - even with its shortcomings - to get the...

Highly Recommend!
Unlike books addressing stock market investing, there are relatively few investor-oriented Bond books, probably due to several reasons - (i) bond concepts are somewhat more quantitative compared to stocks, (ii) bonds have no central "bond exchanges" with readily available price quotes, (iii) bonds can't be sold and bought as easily as stocks, (iv) perception is people can't "swing for the fences" with bonds. However, as the "Strategic Bond Investor" makes clear, it is imperative to become familiar with bond market dynamics to understand how and why interest rates are set, which in turn affects the economy and the stock market. The book does a wonderful job of laying bare the intricacies of the bond market, at the same time stays away from the more technical aspects. The writing style is very engaging, and the content is very organized. The discussion on Bond Types - how big various types of bond markets are and how they got that way, is...

complements Thau
By far the best introduction to bonds is Annette Thau's The Bond Book. But Thau makes no attempt to explain why the price of a given bond fluctuates over time. Crescenzi, one of the most frequently cited of the legion of professional Fed watchers, tries to make up this deficiency, describing the impact of Fed moves, market perceptions of the state of the economy, the supply of new issues, etc. on bond prices. But Crescenzi has a much more ambitious agenda. He explains how the yield curve can be used to forecast developments in the economy. Other chapters summarize how to predict trends within the bond market, from analyzing the put/call ratio to interpreting the economic data that a dozen or more agencies spew out every week. He makes the case that knowing the bond market will be useful to anyone with a credit card in his or her wallet.Crescenzi also wants the book to serve as a general introduction to bonds. There are chapters on "bond basics," types of...

Buy Bonds

With some high yield European bonds being back to close to their callable levels, the time is once again right for investors to sell protection rather than buy the underlying bonds, claims new research by JP Morgan, saying that CDS is now a &ldquo. When bonds are close to their callable levels, investors would be better off selling CDS protection rather than buying the bond, if they want to express a bullish sentiment on the underlying asset, says the research. Bonds that are trading at a discount to par, however, offer a wider spread than CDS and investors would be better off buying the bond itself than selling protection in this case, says the report.
